Museums In Auckland: See The Aviation Display Hall In MOTAT

Aviation Display Hall

The award-winning Aviation Display Hall is home to a world-class collection of recreational, commercial and military aircraft. The collection includes a Sunderland flying boat, of which only four remain in the world, and a WW2 Avro Lancaster. There are also exhibits celebrating New Zealand’s own aviation pioneers Jean Batten and the Walsh Brothers.
Vehicle Technology

Vehicle Technology

MOTAT’s latest exhibition Accelerate: Driving New Zealand, delves into New Zealand’s past, present, and future relationship with vehicles. The exhibition breaks down some of the complex technological processes driving our love affair with cars and explores the innovative thinking and can-do attitude Kiwis are renowned for.
Things To Do In Auckland: Vintage Tram Rides

Vintage Tram Rides

A ride on a vintage tram alongside the picturesque Western Springs Park is a highlight of any visit to MOTAT. The Tramway Collection includes 23 trams that originally operated in New Zealand and Australian cities. A dozen have been restored and are now operational, including a steam tram and a double-decker.
The Pumphouse

The Pumphouse

The award winning Pumphouse was built in 1877 and was considered the most advanced public water supply system in the world. The first item to be added to the MOTAT collection, it has been fully restored to operational level. Originally built to supply Auckland with water, the Pumphouse, the mighty Beam Engine and the Engineer’s Cottage won the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Heritage Award of Merit in 2009.

You can start your experience at either with each site accessible by car, taxi and public transport. Included as part of standard MOTAT admission, the Western Springs Tram service is a fantastic way to experience a historical tram ride between the two sites and passes the idyllic Western Springs Park and Auckland Zoo.

You can plan your journey using the Auckland Transport journey planner:  https://at.govt.nz/bus-train-ferry/journey-planner/

Parking and Travel
Visitor parking at MOTAT 1 is available on Stadium Road (very limited), Great North Road or Motions Road.  At MOTAT 2, parking is directly outside the Aviation Display Hall and on Meola Road. We recommend visitors park at MOTAT 2 via Meola Rd and catch the tram from there to the MOTAT 1 site.
